Art Goals 2025 – How Have I Done so Far and What's Next?

How are we nearly halfway through 2025 already? Although it currently feels like summer’s already been and gone here in South Wales! I thought I’d do a quick look back at how the year’s gone so far in terms of Seren Wen Art and what planes I have for the second half of the year!

The Art – Did I manage to Draw More?

I didn’t really set any solid art goals for this year, even though I did for 2024 – you can read about that in a previous blog. I did have a few ideas about where I wanted to go, both with my art and trying to make of a business/side hustle out of it. The main thing was to produce more drawings! I have managed to produce six drawings so far this year – I think I only managed eight in the whole of last year – it feels like I spend proportionately less time at my drawing board and more time at my computer, updating my website, accounts and the dreaded social media – more on that later!

Grid of six animal drawings: a white dog, spotted dog, owl by moon, perched bird, duck on water, and close-up of bird. Vibrant and detailed.

One of these pieces was my “Little Bird” Tutorial for my fellow artist Lisa Ann Watkins – Animal Art by LAW for her Patreon Channel. Filming this tutorial was something new to me, but I enjoyed the process, so it’s something I may well pursue further in the future!

Find me on Folksy and My First Market

I opened my Folksy Shop towards the end of last year, and although I’m nowhere near my first million, I’ve made a few sales. Setting it up was very easy, if there have been any small issues, the Folksy team are very helpful and quick to respond. If you’ve never heard of Folksy, they’re basically a UK alternative to Etsy. There are some incredibly talented makers of there, so if you’re after a unique handmade gift – or some of my art - do pop over and have a look!

I also recently took the plunge and took part in my very first maker’s market! It was only a small one, which I looked on very much as a learning experience! Although I didn’t sell much, I enjoyed the experience and I’ll planning on doing more, so keep an eye on social media for updates!

Social Media – Screaming Into the Void!

Talking of social media, that’s been a tricky one so far, it feels like chasing moving goal posts in an empty stadium with just a few of your mates for support. I get that you don’t need a million followers or to go viral (whatever that really means) to be successful, but you do need SOME followers! After dabbling with YouTube shorts and TikTok, I still think Instagram is my best social media bet as a visual artist. I did intend to start producing long form video, as I do enjoy the process of filming and editing, it just takes so much time! I have enjoyed writing this blog, and although it doesn’t get as many views as I’d like, I’ll keep it going, for the time being at least!

Art Goals for the Rest of the Year

My immediate priority is to get my entry for Sketch for Survival finished before the deadline on the 30thJune! It’s a VERY competitive competition, I last entered in 2022 and got highly commended, but I’d love to get to the exhibition and auction!

I’m going to take a few weeks off at the start of July, both my “day job” – yes, I still have an actual job – and from Seren Wen art. I may well still do some personal art projects, but we’ll see!

I have LOTS of ideas for new wildlife drawings, particularly for my “Dark Series” drawings. I want to experimant with a few things, I might go big or I might go small, you'll have to wait and see! There are a few new (to me) exhibitions I’d like to have a go at, plus some I’ve done before. Sales seem to be down in general at exhibitions this year, but I have made one sale so far, so I think it’s still worth exhibiting!

I also want to add more pet portraits to my portfolio, and I’ll start advertising commissions from the middle of July. If you’d like to commission me, have a look at my Pet Portrait page and drop me a line with any questions or ideas!

Do you have any art goals for the year? Leave me a comment - I'd love to hear them!
